A Very Good Morning
Morning Wood looks just like any other cafés in the SS15 area except for its cheeky name, which makes it stand out from the rest. You would soon realise that the cheeky name extends to their menu as well. Their menu spans from an all-day breakfast menu to nibbles and bites, pastas, salads and sandwiches.
We started off with their Tentacles from the Bites menu. These are deep fried squid rings, coated in Japanese breadcrumbs, and served with their homemade tartar and arrabbiata sauce. The squid was well coated and fried until it had a nice crunchy texture and went very well with both the sauces. I particularly liked the arrabbiata sauce made from tomatoes, garlic and red chili peppers cooked with olive oil.
I also made an order of Hot Chicks consisting of three pieces each of drummettes and wingettes that have been slathered in a spicy, sweet and sticky sauce, which was more sticky sweet than spicy. The deep fried wings came with a slight crunch while the meat remained tender and moist. This is quite similar to buffalo wings and if you like that, you will certainly enjoy this too.
From the all-day breakfast menu, we went with one of their more popular dishes of Skinny Dip, which is their version of baked eggs, comprising of two sunny side up eggs in a sauce of diced tomatoes, onions and red capsicums. It came with chunks of chicken sausages and cheese (probably not enough if you are a fan of cheese).
It was served in a sizzling pan accompanied by some buttered toast. The flavours of the minced meat, together with the oozy egg, were respectable except that the egg yolk began to firm up as we ate. This is because food served in a hot pan will continue to cook even after it has been brought to the table. So, you better enjoy it fast! The buttered toast was needed to mop up every last bit of the sauce.
Morning Wood serves some good coffee too, like the ones we had, such as Iced Latte, Iced Cappuccino and Hot Nutella Cappuccino. But the standout was the prettily presented Hot Chocolate that proved to be thick, rich, chocolaty and sinfully decadent.
